IRS Enhances Get My Payment Tool

July 10, 2020 Priya Comments Off

The IRS has announced significant enhancements to the “Get My Payment” tool to deliver an improved and smoother experience for Americans eligible to receive Economic Impact Payments (EIPs). These enhancements adjusted several items related to the online tool, which debuted on April 15. Accordingly, these changes will help millions of additional taxpayers with new or expanded information to adding direct deposit information. A Spanish version of the tool is expected to release in a few weeks.

“We encourage people to check back in and visit Get My Payment,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “These enhancements will help many taxpayers. By using Get My Payment now, more people will be able to get payments quickly by being able to add direct deposit information.”

How to Use Get My Payment
The online application is available only on the IRS website and is safe and secure to use. To obtain the status of their payment, taxpayers only require a few pieces of information and, where needed, provide their bank account information. Further, a copy of their most recent tax return can help speed up the process. Moreover, to track the status of their payment, taxpayers will need to enter basic information including social security number, date of birth and mailing address used on their tax return. The feature will then show taxpayers the scheduled delivery date by direct deposit or mail and the last four digits of the bank account being used if the Service has direct deposit information. Additionally, taxpayers who need to add their bank account information to speed receipts of their payment will also need to provide (1) their Adjusted Gross Income from their most recent tax return submitted (either 2019 or 2018); (2) the refund or amount owed from their latest filed tax return; and, (3) bank account type, account and routing numbers.

It is worth noting that in order to help protect against fraud, the tool does not allow taxpayers to change their bank account information that is already on file with the IRS. Further, Get My Payment cannot update bank account information after an EIP has been scheduled for delivery.

The IRS reminded taxpayers that Get My Payment is a U.S. Government system and unauthorized use is prohibited and would be subject criminal and civil penalties. Further, the IRS urged taxpayers to be on the lookout for scams related to the EIPs. Finally, the IRS will post frequently asked questions here and will provide updates as soon as they are available.
