IRS Urges Low-Income Individuals to Use Non-Filers Tool to Get Economic Impact Payment

July 10, 2020 Priya Comments Off

The IRS has reminded low-income individuals to use the free online tool Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info to easily register to receive their Economic Impact Payment. Further, the IRS emphasized that the new tool was designed for people who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and are not required to do so under the law. Moreover, the IRS has recently released a new Spanish language version of the tool to help more taxpayers get their money quickly and easily.

Those who do not normally file a tax return may follow a simple process by visiting the IRS website, looking for “Non-Filers: Enter Payment Info Here” and then providing basic information including Social Security number, name, address and dependents. The Service will use this information to confirm eligibility, calculate and send an Economic Impact Payment. Typically, non filers who earn below $24,400 for married couples or less than $12,200 for single people, including couples and individuals who are homeless, would qualify for the Economic Impact Payment. However, anyone claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer is not eligible. Qualifying married couples can expect to receive $2,400 payment, while others can expect to receive $1,200. Additionally, those with dependents under the age of 17 can get up to an additional $500 for each child.

The IRS has urged those with filing requirements to avoid complications and file properly without using the Non-Filers tool. Further, students and other who file a return only to receive a refund of withheld taxes should also not use this tool. In addition, students and others claimed as dependents on someone else’s tax return don’t qualify for an Economic Impact Payment and are not eligible to use the Non-Filers tool. Finally, more information on Economic Impact Payments, including answers to frequently-asked questions and other resources can be found here.
